Scientists from Linköping University have integrated a variety of electrical components in the rose, including wires, digital logic circuit, and even components with display capabilities. When the voltage is applied, its leaves can change color.


And all this thanks to a special conductive polymer PEDOT.


PEDOT (poly(2,3-dihydrothieno-1,4-dioxin)) is a widely used conductive polymer material, originally developed by the Bayer in German. Because of high conductivity, good stability, large visible light transmittance and other excellent features, it has caught the broad interest of scientists.


Researchers tried a lot of materials, and a derivative of PEDOT—PEDOT:S-H—is the only synthetic material that can assemble into the required structure in the xylem nutrient transport channel of the roses. It can be used as a wire that does not prevent the passage of the important chemical substances required for plant growth.


The PEDOT:PSS (poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)/poly(styrenesulfonate)) solution was injected into the rose, and the researchers distributed the electrochemical reaction pool on the rose leaves, creating a "display" of organic pixels on it. When a voltage is applied, the polymer interacts with the ions in the blade to change its color.


Is it cool? This kind of electronic plant may be used as an indicator of the environment in the future, and we even can manipulate them, so that they can change color according to human orders.


In fact, PEDOT (CAS 126213-51-2) also has a very wide range of applications: PEDOT has good conductivity and excellent environmental stability, it can be used as a solid electrolyte capacitor cathode material; PEDOT-PSS coating can be stable even in a humid environment, and it has anti-static effect; American scientists developed artificial nerve by PEDOT, with superior performance than the natural nerve, etc. With scientists' further research, we believe that the application of PEDOT will be more extensive.
