Bovine serum albumin (BSA), an ideal drug carrier material 2020-09-18 17:21:59

Bovine albumin, also called Bovine serum albumin (BSA), the CAS number is 9048-46-8, which is a biochemical reagent widely used in many disciplines of biology, medicine and pharmacy. Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA) has good biocompatibility and biodegradability. It is often used as a drug carrier in the pharmaceutical field. It can not only improve the water solubility of hydrophobic drugs, play a role in drug release, but also reduce drug side effects . In recent years, with the rise of nanotechnology, drug delivery based on polymer nanoparticles has received widespread attention, and the study of bovine serum albumin as a drug-carrying microsphere material has attracted more and more attention.

At present, there are many reports about insulin and antibacterial drugs being encapsulated by bovine serum albumin (BSA). Research on protein drug delivery systems using bovine serum albumin as the standard protein model drug is mainly focused on nanoparticles and nanocapsules, Nano microspheres, microcapsules, multivesicular liposomes, liposomes, etc.

Zhang Yongli and others[1] from Guangdong Pharmaceutical University invented luteolin-glycyrrhizic acid conjugated bovine serum albumin drug-loaded nanoparticles, they are glycyrrhizic acid conjugated bovine serum albumin drug-loaded nanoparticles system through chemical modification of bovine serum albumin by glycyrrhizic acid, and then luteolin is coated in the glycyrrhizic acid conjugated bovine serum albumin drug-loaded nanoparticles system; wherein the glycyrrhizic acid conjugated bovine serum albumin drug-loaded nanoparticles having liver-targeting are taken as a carrier, and luteolin is taken as an anti-liver cancer bulk drug. The nanoparticles can improve the solubility, stability and targeting performance of luteolin and the drug-loaded nanoparticles to improve their bioavailability and anti-liver cancer efficacy. The encapsulation rate of the nanoparticles is increased to 30.33%. On an in-vitro cellular level, compared with GL-BSA-Lut-NPs by Lut, the drug-loaded nanoparticles have significantly increased water solubility, absorption, anti-tumor efficacy and the like.

Zhang Hongping[2] of Southwest University of Science and Technology reported a preparation method of a bovine serum albumin/polydopamine composite micro-nano sphere. adding a dopamine hydrochloride solution into a stirred alcohol ammonia solution, then adding a bovine serum albumin aqueous solution and ethyl alcohol I and stirring; filtering and drying to obtain the bovine serum albumin/polydopamine composite micro-nano sphere. The preparation method disclosed by the invention has the benefits that the bovine serum albumin/poly dopamine composite micro-nano sphere is prepared by utilizing good biocompatibility and biodegradability of bovine serum albumin and through combining polydopamine; the composite micro-nano sphere has the controlled release performance for drugs and can be used as a drug controlled release carrier to control the release of doxorubicin hydrochloride and other water-soluble small molecule drugs. As the drug carrier, the bovine serum albumin/polydopamine composite micro-nano sphere is large in drug loading capacity, long in slow release time for the drugs, high in release speed and good in stability, and can be preserved for a long time.

In conclusion, BSA is an ideal drug carrier and plays an important role in medical polymer carrier materials.
