The preparation methods of N-ethylcarbazole 2018-02-05 15:36:22

N-ethylcarbazole is an important organic intermediate which is widely used in synthesis of dye, pigment, pesticide, pharmaceutical and photoelectrical materials etc.


In the following, several methods of synthesizing N-ethylcarbazole are introduced briefly. The preparation methods are classified into two categories. One is to prepare it using carbazole as raw material under high temperature and pressure in the absence of catalyst. And the reaction time is long.


Electronic Chemical

The other one is using catalyst in the process of synthesis which results in reducing reaction temperature and pressure greatly, shortening reaction time and high yield. Four synthesis strategies were included in the presence of catalyst.


(1) The raw materials are carbazole and chloroehtane, and KF as basic catalyst. The reaction condition is mild with high reaction activity and selectivity.

(2) The raw materials are carbazole and diethyl sulfate. The disadvantage of the preparation method is that diethyl sulfate has high toxicity. Now the method is not used at all.

(3) Carbazole and diethyl carbonate are as raw materials. Diethyl carbonate is less toxic than diethyl sulfate, and the yield is over 90%. So it is a promising synthetic method and suitable for production in bulk.


(4)The raw materials are carbazole and ehyl 4-mthylbenzenesulfonate. The disadvantage of the method is high cost with by-product.


In the foregoing preparation methods, the preparation using carbazole and alkyl halides as raw materials is superior to other methods in according to reaction conditions, time consuming, yield and selectivity.
